Fanime 2014 Convention Report

Fanime 2014 Report

Swag Bag

One thing's for certain for Norcal's Fanime con, the 'linecon' moniker is mostly dead. It certainly was a pleasure to just walk and walk out and get your badge. This allowed me to actually go around to some panels, take pictures, but the only sour point was the events at the Civic Center across the street. It literally took me 3 hours to get into the Swap Meet. I wound up not buying anything. Anyways, onto the panels I attended.

Out of all the panels, I did enjoy the gametrailers.com 'What's wrong with Nintendo Panel?” which hosted by GT producer Michael Domiani. This mainly consisted of constructive criticism on why Nintendo lagging behind Sony and Microsoft in the console race. There was also a general GT panel with reviewer Ben Moore, the excellent Kyle Bosman, and Domiani again. They went over what they do at the site. As well as a short video by Brandon Jones who unfortunately wasn't there. He went on to speak about the origin of game trailers and how it used to be a video archive site and slowly turned into an actual game journalism site.

I accidentally walked into a panel by Steve Savage were his panel was called “Epic Resume GO!” and provided me with some valuable tips on redoing your resume. Mine hasn't changed since 2006 and in my opinion is rather flat. Since I am out of work, I'll get to it soon. There was also a Internet VA and adaptive writing panel for anime which or subjects I am extremely interested in. The Voice Actors panel was hosted by someone you probably remember as Meryl from Egorator's Metal Gear Awesome series, Kira Buckland. Fans asked questions such as what mics should they use, breathing exercisers, and what classes a person should take to pursue VA work.

The adaptive writing which is pretty interesting so to speak. Unlike the old days were it was passable to do a 1 to 1 translation, There are now two teams, one for translation and one for adaptation. This was hosted by J. Michael Tatum who recently worked on Funimation's localization of Attack on Titan which is now airing on Adult Swim. He mainly focused on things such as style, matching lip flap, and dealing with cultural differences.

After the con there was plenty of places to get smashed like the Blue Chip, and eat. From Iguana's 5 pound Buritozilla to the eccentric Psycho Donuts. Overall, the atmosphere was more upbeat than last year, and still has that laid back feel of a smaller con, but with the size of AX. I will definitely return for next year!
